SAU Softball on Spring Break trip

The St. Ambrose softball team will play 10 games as part of its annual Spring Break trip.

March 23
The March 23 doubleheader at Middle Georgia State was canceled due to rain.

March 22
St. Ambrose 8, Miami-Hamilton 0 (5 inn.)

Alyia Oliver tossed a three-hit shutout as St. Ambrose blanked Miami-Hamilton 8-0 in five innings Tuesday. The Bee offense continued its surge, finishing with 11 hits. An Olivia Wells single in the first plated Olivia McClintock to start the scoring. Wells later added a solo home run in the fourth. That came on the heels of a four-run third inning that featured RBIs from Alyssa Schumacher and McClintock. Schumacher added an RBI single in the fourth to score Aleah WightMaria Provenzano ended the scoring by coming around on an error in the fourth. McClintock, Wight and Sophia Delgado matched Wells with two hits apiece. Oliver struck out three in the complete-game victory.

St. Ambrose 11, Grinnell 3 (5 inn.)
The offensive explosion continued as the Bees banged out nine hits in an 11-3 five-inning victory over Grinnell. St. Ambrose had to rally after Grinnell grabbed a 3-1 lead after two. SAU pushed across six runs in the fourth inning. Schumacher, Allyson Polly, McClintock and Shai Erdrich had run-scoring singles in the frame. Kaitlyn Sandora added an RBI groundout and Stenger had a sacrifice fly in the inning. Leading 7-3, the Bees broke things open in the fifth. Polly had her second RBI single and Wight cleared the bases with a three-run double to account for the final score. Schumacher and Erdrich also had two hits for the Bees. Erica Ralfs went the distance, allowing eight hits and three runs over five innings. She struck out six.

March 21
St. Ambrose 14, SUNY-Old Westbury 0 (5 inn.)

Erica Ralfs and Alyia Oliver combined on a two-hit shutout and the SAU offense pounded out 12 hits in a 14-0 five-inning win over SUNY-Old Westbury Monday. St. Ambrose scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings as every Bee contributed. Shai Erdrich went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Alyssa Schumacher also went 3-for-4, driving in three and scoring once. Kayla Stenger was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Olivia McClintock had a hit in her only official at bat. She was also walked twice, knocked in three and scored three runs. Grace Schmitz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Kaitlyn Sandora had a hit and scored twice. Aleah WightSophia Delgado and Allison Polly each scored a run in the victory. Ralfs earned the win after allowing only one hit over three scoreless innings. She struck out six. Oliver threw the final two innings and struck out one.

St. Ambrose 13, SUNY-Old Westbury 5 (5 inn.)
The offensive explosion continued in the second game of the day, a 13-5, five-inning win over SUNY-Old Westbury. St. Ambrose totaled 18 hits, three each coming off the bats of Cassie SproutKaylee KingBrittany Rabe and Brooke Baker. McClintock and Bella Welton each had two hits, and Maria Provenzano and Kylee Sweenie also collected hits. Rabe drove in four runs, which included a two-run triple that ended the game in the bottom of the fifth. Provenzano, who scored three runs, knocked in three and Baker drove in two. King and McClintock also had RBIs. SAU scored four times in the first inning but led just 4-3 in the third. Nursing a 7-5 lead in the fifth, the Bees exploded for six runs in the bottom of the frame to close out the game. Provenzano also earned the complete-game victory. She struck out seven.

March 19
St. Ambrose 7, Saint Mary 5

St. Ambrose raced to a 7-0 lead after four innings and hung on for a 7-5 win over Saint Mary. Grace Schmitz had a two-run single, and Olivia Wells and Alyssa Schumacher also had run-scoring hits, as part of a four-run first inning for the Bees. Olivia McClintock scored on a passed ball in the second, and both McClintock and Shai Edrich came in to score on an error in the fourth. Saint Mary came back with four runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. The Flames threatened for more, loading the bases with two outs in the seventh before Alyia Oliver got a strikeout to end the game. Oliver earned the save as the third SAU pitcher of the game. Erica Ralfs started and allowed four hits over five scoreless innings before Corinn Vega and Oliver each tossed an inning. McClintock finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Kayla Stenger had two hits.

St. Ambrose 6, Concordia (Mich.) 1
Oliver scattered nine hits in a complete-game effort to lead St. Ambrose past Concordia 6-1. Oliver struck out three while only allowing one run, that coming in the fifth with the Bees already leading 6-1. SAU struck early. Kalya Stenger had her first of three hits in the opening inning to score McClintock. Wells added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to plate Cassie Sprout for a 2-0 lead. Sophia Delgado ripped a two-run home run as part of a four-run fifth inning. Wells dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Sprout and Brittany Rabe added an RBI single to score Stenger later in the inning. Sprout joined Stenger with a three-hit game as part of the Bees' 11-hit attack. McClintock, Schumacher and Allison Polly also each had a hit in the victory.

March 18
St. Ambrose 6, Saint Mary 2

Grace Schmitz had a two-out, two-run single to cap a four-run fifth inning as St. Ambrose opened its trip with a 6-2 win over Saint Mary. Olivia McClintock also drove in a run in the frame that helped the Bees build a 6-1 advantage. McClintock and Kayla Stenger each collected two of SAU's nine total hits. Stenger's two hits accounted for the Bees' first two runs. She had an RBI single in the first to give SAU a 1-0 lead, and then broke a 1-1 tie in the third with a run-scoring single to plate Cassie SproutAlyia Oliver got the win by allowing just one runs over five innings. Maria Provenzano threw the final two innings in relief.

St. Ambrose 4, Hannibal-LaGrange 3
Shai Erdrich finished with three hits and McClintock and Alyssa Schumacher each had two as SAU moved to 8-3 on the season following a 4-3 win over Hannibal-LaGrange. It was a sacrifice fly off the bat of Schmitz, her second of the game, that plated Kaitlyn Sandora in the top of the fifth inning that proved to be the difference. St. Ambrose took a quick 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Olivia Wells and the first sac fly from Schmitz. The Trojans battled back to knot the score at 2-2 before Sprout stole home in the fourth inning to put the Bees back in front. After Sandora scored for a 4-2 lead, HLG got one run back in the bottom of the fifth to get within a run. The Trojans had the potential tying run on base in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but the Bees were able to escape. Erica Ralfs earned the win with four innings of work. Oliver worked the final three frames to get the save.
