Bees win three of four at first Ambrose Dome Tournament

Bees win three of four at first Ambrose Dome Tournament

St. Ambrose went 3-1 at its first Ambrose Dome Tournament of the season. The Bees defeated Saint Mary 5-4 and Mount Mercy 5-0 Saturday before closing the two-day event with an 8-2 win over Waldorf. SAU also dropped a 5-0 decision to Mount Mercy Sunday.

Sophia Delgado's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the game-winner in the 5-4 win over Saint Mary. It plated Kayla Stenger and capped a rally for the Bees. Trailing 4-2, SAU evened the score on back-to-back run-scoring singles from Kaitlyn Sandora and Olivia McClintock in the bottom of the fourth.

Allison Polly had two of the Bees' six hits. Maria Provenzano earned the win with four scoreless innings in relief of Alyia Oliver

Erica Ralfs followed that with a five-hit shutout of Mount Mercy. She struck out six and only issued one walk.

Aleah Wight gave SAU a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third inning. Alyssa Schumacher followed by drawing a bases-loaded walk and Olivia Wells doubled the lead with a two-run single in the third. Delgado drove in an insurance run in the fifth with a single that scored Shai Erdrich. Seven different Bees had a hit in the victory.

Ralfs closed the tournament by getting the win in the 8-2 decision over Waldorf Sunday afternoon. She allowed only two runs, both coming in the sixth, on 5 1/3 innings. Oliver recorded the last five outs.

St. Ambrose managed only five hits and didn't break things open until late. SAU led just 1-0 into the sixth on McClintock's steal of home in the first inning. Four of the Bees' hits came in the sixth, and SAU also took advantage of three walks, a hit batsman and an error to score seven runs in the frame. Wells and Kaylee King each had two RBIs in the inning, and Ralfs and Brittany Rabe each knocked in one.

The Bee bats were silenced in the 5-0 loss to Mount Mercy earlier Sunday. SAU scratched out just two hits, a one-out King bunt single in the fifth and an Polly single in the seventh that put two on with no outs. But the next three Bees struck out to end the game.

SAU, now 4-1 overall, will host a second Ambrose Dome Tournament next weekend. The event will feature Mount Mercy, Waldorf and Mount Marty.
