Offense goes quiet in losses at Roosevelt

The St. Ambrose offense could only muster 10 total hits in dropping a doubleheader at Roosevelt by scores of 5-2 and 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

The Bees collected five hits in each game.

Roosevelt (28-12, 9-7 CCAC) scored all the runs they would need in the opening game in the first inning. The Lakers pushed across four runs on three hits for a fast 4-0 lead.

St. Ambrose got both of its runs in the third. After Grace Schmitz was hit by a pitch, Kaitlyn Sandora sacrificed her over to second and Jazzy Bowman singled to get the Bees on the board. Olivia McClintock beat out an infield single and Logan Frerichs followed with a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 4-2.

SAU would get just two more hits the rest of the game. Bowman led off the fifth with a bunt single, but she was quickly erased on a double-play ball. In the seventh, Colleen Barrett reached on a lead-off single but the Bees came up empty.

Erica Ralfs took the loss after working five-plus innings. Jane Thomas got the final three outs in relief.

St. Ambrose struck first in the second game. Aleah Wight drove in Isabella Prado with a sacrifice fly and Alyia Oliver had an RBI single to plate Frerichs for a 2-0 lead in the fourth.

Roosevelt drew even with a two-run fifth inning. The game remained tied into the bottom of the seventh. A two-out walk was followed by back-to-back Laker hits to bring in the winning run.

Thomas took the loss in relief of Oliver.

Shai Erdrich picked up two of the five Bee hits.

St. Ambrose, now 15-7 overall and 9-5 in the CCAC, will visit No. 14 Saint Xavier Tuesday.
