SAU drops doubleheader to No. 16 Olivet Nazarene

After a two-week layoff forced by weather postponements, St. Ambrose returned to action against No. 16 Olivet Nazarene Tuesday afternoon at St. Vincent's.

The Bees had their chances in the opener but dropped the doubleheader by scores of 7-6 and 11-1.

Nearly all the scoring was done over the first three innings of Game 1.

SAU grabbed a 2-1 lead in the first inning on a two-out, two-run double from Colleen Barrett that scored Olivia McClintock and Erica Ralfs. Olivet Nazarene (16-3, 7-0 CCAC) responded with three runs in the top of the second.

The Bees got one back in the bottom of the frame. McClintock smashed a single past the third baseman, which plated Cassie Sprout to cut the deficit to 4-3 (video below courtesy SAUtv).

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the third. Sophia Delgado smashed a triple to right to score Natalie Desmond and Kaitlyn Sandora to again keep the Bees within a single run at 6-5 (video below courtesy SAUtv).

Trailing 7-5, SAU got its final run in the fifth. Sandora ripped a single to right to score Shai Erdrich with what proved to be the final run (video below courtesy SAUtv).

The Bees left at least one runner on base in each of the seven innings. St. Ambrose had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth but could not score. Then in the seventh, Sandora, who had reached on a one-out error, was thrown out at the plate on Delgado's single to thwart the Bees' final chance.

Delgado finished 3-for-4 with the two RBIs. McClintock and Barrett each had two hits.

Jane Thomas was charged with the loss. Alyia Oliver allowed just one earned run over the final five innings in relief.

St. Ambrose actually got on the board first in the second game. Barrett followed singles from Erdrich and Kayla Stenger with a bunt single to score a run to give SAU a fast 1-0 lead in the first inning.

But after picking up three hits in the first, St. Ambrose had just one more hit the rest of the way - an Allison Polly single to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

The Tigers used a three-run home run as part of a six-run third inning to take control. ONU tacked on five more runs in the fifth to close out the game.

Ralfs took the loss.

SAU will now prepare for a busy weekend. The team will host Trinity Christian Friday, visit St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday, return home to welcome Indiana South Bend on Sunday, before playing for the fourth time in four days at Cardinal Stritch Monday.
