St. Ambrose begins conference play with sweep of CCSJ

Logan Frerichs had a two-run double as part of a three-run sixth inning to help St. Ambrose rally for a 6-4 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Calumet St. Joseph Tuesday afternoon. The Bees won the second game 4-2 to complete the sweep at St. Vincent's.

SAU needed to rally in the opener after Calumet (6-22, 0-2 CCAC) grabbed a 4-3 lead with a four-run third inning. But in the sixth, Allison Polly and pinch hitter Cassie Sprout drew walks to start the frame. They both advanced a base on a wild pitch before Frerichs ripped a double to left center to put the Bees in front.

Kaitlyn Sandora followed with a walk and Sophia Delgado dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. One out later, Olivia McClintock had an infield single to score Frerichs with an insurance run.

The Bees got into a little trouble in the top of the seventh as the Crimson Wave loaded the bases with two outs, but Jane Thomas got the next batter to foul out to Colleen Barrett to end the game.

Thomas earned the win after throwing four innings of scoreless relief. She allowed just three hits. Alyia Oliver worked the first three innings and was charged with four runs.

St. Ambrose grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the second. Erica Ralfs singled and pinch runner Shai Erdrich stole second. Barrett's sacrifice bunt was thrown away allowing Erdrich to score. Frerichs singled and Alyssa Schumacher later followed with a two-run single. CCSJ answered with four runs in the third before Frerichs keyed the late rally.

Jazzy Bowman joined Frerichs with two hits in the first game.

McClintock and Erdrich each had two hits and Olivia Wells drove in two in the second game.

Wells doubled in Frerichs to get the scoring started in the second inning. Schumacher added an RBI single in the fourth. Wells also scored in the inning on a throwing error. Then in the sixth, Wells dropped down a squeeze bunt to score Aleah Wight with the team's fourth run.

Calumet, which had only three hits through six innings, pushed across a pair of runs and had the potential tying runs on base in the seventh before Thomas closed things out.

Ralfs got the win by tossing five scoreless innings. Thomas earned the save with two innings in relief. The two Bee pitchers combined for eight strikeouts.

SAU, now 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCAC, will play a doubleheader at Cardinal Stritch next Wednesday, Apr. 7.
