Bees get two wins in final non-conference action

St. Ambrose will open CCAC play at home this weekend, and the Bees appear ready.

SAU swept a doubleheader at Trinity Christian Wednesday in the team's final non-conference action, running a winning streak to five games. The Bees won the opener 8-4 before taking the second game 11-4. The second game was called due to darkness in the sixth inning.

The offense put together some big innings to power the sweep.

In the opener, the Bees sent 12 batters to the plate as part of a seven-run fifth inning. Olivia McClintock had two hits and an RBI in the inning and Logan Frerichs walked and delivered a two-run single in the frame. Jazzy Bowman, Kayla Stenger and Colleen Barrett also drove in runs as part of the big inning that put SAU in front 8-2.

That was more than enough support for Erica Ralfs, who allowed four hits and four runs over six innings. Alyia Oliver pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

McClintock was the only Bee to finish with multiple hits in the first game. Barrett scored a pair of runs, including the team's first run, as she came around to score on Allison Polly's two-out RBI single in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.

St. Ambrose put together three big innings late to complete the sweep.

Kaitlyn Sandora, who doubled and eventually scored on an error to get the Bees on the board in the third, had a big bases-clearing triple as part of a four-run fourth inning to put SAU in front for good.

SAU added to its lead in the fifth. Stenger singled to plate Aleah Wight and pinch hitter Kylee Sweenie added a two-run single to extend the lead to 8-2. Stenger, Olivia Wells and Sweenie had RBIs in the sixth. Trinity Christian pushed across a run and had a runner on second with one out when the game was called due to darkness.

Wight went 3-for-4 while Stenger and Sandora each had two of the Bees' 13 hits.

Oliver went the distance, allowing just two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings to get the win.

St. Ambrose, now 6-2 overall, will host Calumet St. Joseph to open CCAC play Saturday. Game 1 of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
