Bees sweep doubleheader from Warriors

Colleen Barrett had a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give St. Ambrose a 6-5 win in the first game of a doubleheader at St. Vincent's Sunday afternoon.

The Bees carried that momentum into the second game, completing the sweep with a 11-3 victory in five innings.

Playing outside at home for the first time in nearly two years, St. Ambrose was forced to rally late after building an early lead in the opener.

An RBI single from Kayla Stenger in the first and a sacrifice fly from Olivia McClintock in the second staked Bee starter Erica Ralfs to a quick 2-0 lead. Waldorf got one run back in the third, but in the fourth, McClintock singled through the right side to score Sophia Delgado to push the lead to 3-1.

It nearly all fell apart in the fifth. The Warriors took advantage of two hits, two walks and a passed ball to push across three runs for a 4-3 lead.

The Bees answered in their half of the frame. Shai Erdrich led off with a base hit. She proceeded to steal second and when the catcher's throw deflected off a glove into the outfield, Erdrich came all the way around to score to tie the game.

Pinch hitter Allison Polly laced a run-scoring triple to center in the bottom of the sixth to give St. Ambrose a short-lived 5-4 lead. Because in the top of the seventh, Waldorf tied the game at 5-5.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Ralfs got things started with a one-out double to right center. Barrett then singled up the middle to score pinch runner Emma Gorden with the game-winning run.

Stenger had three and Delgado had two of SAU's 13 hits.

Alyia Oliver got the win in relief of Ralfs. Oliver allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings.

The second game wasn't nearly as dramatic. St. Ambrose scored six runs in the first inning, added two runs in the second and third, before ending the game on Brittany Rabe's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the fifth.

Rabe finished with two hits and drove in two. Aleah Wight was 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple and three runs scored. McKenna Vrbovsky was 2-for-2. Stenger drove in three runs while Logan Frerichs knocked in two. Natalie Desmond scored two runs in the win.

Jane Thomas allowed one run over four innings to earn the win. Oliver pitched one inning in relief.

The Bees, now 4-2 overall, will visit Trinity Christian Tuesday before opening conference play Saturday at home against Calumet St. Joseph.
