St. Ambrose splits season-opening doubleheader

Aleah Wight went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Kayla Stenger homered and drove in four as St. Ambrose defeated Waldorf 9-0 in five innings in the Packer Dome in Austin, Minn., Saturday afternoon.

Stenger and Olivia McClintock each finished with two hits for the Bees.

Stenger, Erica Ralfs and Colleen Barrett had RBIs as part of a three-run first for St. Ambrose. SAU tacked on three more runs in the second. Wight had a two-run triple and later scored on Stenger's RBI single.

After McClintock and Wight had back-to-back doubles to open the fourth, Stenger followed with her two-run blast down the left-field line to complete the scoring.

McClintock and Wight each scored three runs in the win. McKenna Vrbovsky and Brittany Rabe each had a hit for the Bees.

Ralfs was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst. She allowed just three hits over four scoreless innings to earn the win. Jane Thomas pitched a scoreless final inning to close out the victory.

The nine-run explosion came after St. Ambrose was limited to just two hits in a 5-0 loss to Mount Mercy.

Logan Frerichs had a one-out single in the second and Allison Polly hit a single leading off the fifth for the Bees.

The Mustangs scored three runs in the second and pushed across two more in the third. They took advantage of four Bee errors to plate three unearned runs in the win.

Thomas was charged with the loss. Alyia Oliver did not allow a run over 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

SAU will next play a non-conference doubleheader against Roosevelt in Rosemont, Ill., on Friday, Mar. 12.
