St. Ambrose competes in Reno Tournament of Champions

Wrestling against several different programs from the NAIA and NCAA Division I levels, St. Ambrose Competed in the Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev., over the weekend. They competed in the dual portion of the event on Friday, and the individual portion on Sunday.

In the individual portion, Guiseppe Guerra had the best run of the tournament for St. Ambrose. Wrestling at 141 pounds, Guerra won his first two matches to reach the quarterfinals. Guerra won his opening round match by decision, earning an 11-7 victory. In his second match, he was able to secure a takedown in the first period of sudden victory to win 9-6.

There were several other Fighting Bees that were able to secure match wins in the individual portion - Isaac Martinez (133), Reese Finch (149), Slade Dias (157), Jayden Terronez (174), Dylan Meiners (184), Tyler Casey (197), Tyreese Johnson (197), and Abdullah Razzak (285). Ariel Vega (125), Diego Machado (165), and Jeremiah Morris (285) also competed for the Bees.

For the dual portion on Friday, the Bees competed against Montana State Northern and Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). Against Montana State Northern, Steele Dias earned a decision win for the Bees at 125 pounds, and Martinez earned a major decision victory to get the Bees out to an early lead. Guerra won via forfeit and Terronez secured a second period pin. The Bees dropped the opening dual 29-19.

Against Embry-Riddle, Martinez and Guerra each earned decision wins to give the Bees a 6-3 lead after three bouts, and Casey earned a win via forfeit. The Bees dropped the second dual 34-12.

St. Ambrose is in action next when they host Augustana inside Lee Lohman Arena on Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
