SAU's season comes to an end at NAIA Championships

The uncle-nephew team of Daniel Terronez and Jayden Terronez saw their seasons come to an end on the first day of the NAIA Men's Wrestling Championships in Wichita, Kan.

Daniel lost two competitive matches to nationally-ranked opponents at 149 pounds. Despite a pair of third-period takedowns, he lost his first-round match to No. 12 Cole Luallen of Reinhardt 9-4.

After a bye in his consolation opener, Daniel dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 6 Aaron Gandara of Southern Oregon. He fell behind 4-1 after one period before using an escape in the second to pull within 4-2. But Gandara got a takedown in the final minute of the match to seal the win. Daniel, a grad student from Moline, Ill., finished the season with a 22-14 record.

Jayden, seeded No. 14 at 165 pounds, was stunned in the first round. A four-point nearfall in the second period allowed Bridger Hall of Providence to open a 7-3 lead. Jayden got an escape early in the third and then used a takedown to get within 7-5 in the final minute but that would be it.

The sophomore from Moline, Ill., was dominant in his first match in the consolation bracket against Oklahoma City's Hayden Brown. Takedowns in the first and second periods helped him open a 4-0 lead. A reversal and later a takedown with 31 seconds remaining helped him to a 10-3 win.

Jayden also got off to a fast start in his next consolation match against Dayton Hill of Ottawa. Two first-period takedowns gave him a 4-2 lead. But in the second, Hill got a quick escape and then took Jayden down before pinning him in 4:18.

Jayden, who was appearing at nationals for the second straight year, finished the season with a 25-17 record.
