Bees crown five runners-up at Battle for the Helmet

St. Ambrose five runners-up and added a pair of third-place finishes at the Battle for the Helmet, hosted by NIACC in Mason City, Iowa, Saturday. That helped the Bees take third as a team in the six-school event with 109 total points. 

Diego Machado earned 17 team points with two bonus-point wins at 157 pounds. He opened with a pin in 3:42 in the quarterfinals and followed that with a 13-4 major decision in the semifinals. Machado fell 8-7 in the championship match.

Dylan Meiners got through a tough quarterfinal match at 184 pounds with a 3-1 decision before earning a spot in the finals with a pin in 5:31 in the semifinal round. Meiners settled for second after dropping an 11-6 decision.

Riley Woods also won by fall in his run at 141 pounds. He started his bracket with a 10-4 decision before pinning his semifinal opponent in 5:57. He dropped a 13-7 decision to claim second.

Daniel Terronez picked up a 13-5 major decision in the quarters at 149 pound. A 9-6 win in the semifinals pushed him into the championship match, where he fell 13-4.

After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, Jayden Terronez won his semifinal at 165 pounds by fall in 6:55 before dropping his first-place match.

Harper College won the team title with 152 points. Iowa Western was second with 138 points.

Mick Chagnon and Tyler Casey each won a match to place third in his respective weight class. Chagnon pinned his opponent in 2:40 at 125 pounds to take third, while Casey earned an 8-2 decision in his match at 197 pounds.

Wrestling unattached, Isaac Martinez took third place at 133 pounds. Both of his wins came by fall, including his pin in 2:17 in the third-place match. 

Blake Dirksen (149 pounds) and Thade Gottschalk (174 pounds) also competed for St. Ambrose.

The Bees will compete in the Mike Duroe Invitational in Mount Vernon, Iowa, next Saturday.
