St. Ambrose competes in Reno Tournament of Champions

Battling some of the top wrestlers from across the country, including from the NCAA Division I level, St. Ambrose had four different wrestlers win at least one match at the Reno Tournament of Champions Sunday.

Daniel Terronez had the best run for the Bees, winning three matches at 149 pounds. His first-round win came via pin, which he earned in 6:25 over an opponent from Southeastern Oregon CC. After dropping his match in the round of 32, Terronez bounced back with an 8-5 decision over a wrestler from Corban and a 2-1 decision over an opponent from Vanguard. His run ended with a loss to a competitor from Michigan State.

Also wrestling at 149 pounds, Parker Terronez won a first-round match over a wrestler from Umpqua by pin in 2:38. The two other SAU victories came by fall. Diego Machado needed 4:03 to pin his opponent from Vanguard in his first match at 157 pounds. Dylan Meiners got a pin in 2:42 in his opener against an unattached wrestler from Oregon State at 184 pounds.

Also competing in the Tournament of Champions were Mick Chagnon (125 pounds), Ariel Vega (125), Hunter Meyrer (141), Blake Dirksen (149), Slade Dias (157), Jayden Terronez (165), Chris Bridges (174), Jeremiah Morris (285) and Abdullah Razzak (285).

As part of the event, St. Ambrose also wrestled a pair of duals Friday. The Bees fell to Montana State Northern 34-12 and to Eastern Oregon 36-13.

Jayden Terronez won both of his Friday bouts. He earned a 3-2 decision against Montana State before picking up an 11-0 major decision against Eastern Oregon. Machado pinned his opponent from MSU-Northern in 4:45 and Meiners won a 9-2 decision. Daniel Terronez won 12-5 over Eastern Oregon. Bridges won by forfeit.

The Bees will face cross-river rival Augustana Wednesday, Jan. 4.
