SAU gets three finalists at Coe Invitational

St. Ambrose had a strong showing at the Coe College Invitational Saturday, placing three wrestlers into the finals in their respective weight classes. Daniel Terronez (149 pounds), Jayden Terronez (165) and Thade Gottschalk (174) were all runners-up for the Bees.

Daniel Terronez was tested in all three of his matches. After a first-round bye, he earned a 10-8 victory in the quarterfinals and a sudden-victory 5-3 decision in the semifinals. In the championship match, Terronez fell 3-2.

Jayden Terronez cruised through his first three matches. He started with a 13-4 major decision before back-to-back pins, one coming in 1:43 and the other in 1:36, put him in the finals at 165 pounds. His run ended there.

Gottschalk also had little trouble getting to the final match. He opened with a bye and then pinned his next two opponents in a total time of less than two minutes (58 seconds and 1:00). He also settled for second place.

Those were three of several Bees who earned top-eight finishes.

Diego Machado was one of three SAU wrestlers to take fourth place. Machado won by fall in 4:13 and earned an 8-4 decision to reach the semifinals at 157 pounds. After dropping a 5-1 decision, he bounced back with a 12-5 win in the consolation bracket. He lost 6-5 in the third-place bout.

Dylan Meiners, who pinned his first foe in 5:42, dropped his quarterfinal match at 184 pounds and had to battle back through the consolation draw. Three straight wins via fall, coming in 4:54, 4:52 and 2:12, got him a shot a third, but he fell 15-7.

Tyler Casey also took fourth place after a big run in the consolation bracket at 197 pounds. After losing his quarterfinal match, Casey won by tech fall 18-2 and then earned hard-fourth 7-5 and 7-4 decisions, before a medical forfeit in the third-place match ended his day.

Mick Chagnon and Chris Bridges each finished sixth. Chagnon had back-to-back wins by fall (1:17 and 2:01) in his run at 125 pounds, and Bridges won a major decision 13-3 at 174 pounds.

AJ Johnson won three matches, including an 11-4 decision in the seventh-place match at 157 pounds, and Ethan Blair picked up a 15-6 major decision in the seventh-place match at 165 pounds for St. Ambrose. Parker Terronez won a consolation match by fall in 28 seconds at 157 pounds, and Slade Dias earned a 7-6 decision in his opening match at 157 pounds. Jeremiah Morris lost his quarterfinal match at heaveyweight in sudden victory 5-3 before setting for seventh place. Blake Dirksen (149 pounds) also competed for St. Ambrose.

The Bees are next scheduled to host Joliet Junior College in a dual Tuesday.
