Dual season underway for St. Ambrose

In their first duals of the year, the Fighting Bees lost at home to Cornell 38-3 and Iowa Wesleyan 32-16 Wednesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

Riley Woods won a pair of matches for St. Ambrose. His 7-2 decision at 141 pounds was SAU's lone win against Cornell. The Bees were competitive in several other matches. Michael Witt fell at heavyweight 4-3. Tyler Casey dropped a 5-3 decision at 197 pounds. And Diego Machado lost 8-5 at 157 pounds.

Woods needed just 1:45 to earn his second win of the night, pinning his opponent from Iowa Wesleyan in that time in the Bees' second dual. That was one of two wins via pinfall for St. Ambrose. Thade Gottschalk got the other, winning his match at 174 pounds in 2:01. Casey picked up an 11-2 major decision at 197 pounds for the other Bee points.

SAU's Daniel Terronez lost a tight 9-8 decision at 149 pounds and Jack Merlo fell 7-4 at 184 pounds.

Cornell defeated Iowa Wesleyan 26-23 in the first dual of the night.

St. Ambrose will next compete in the Grand View Open Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
