St. Ambrose begins second season at Dan Harris Open

Several Bees won multiple matches at the season-opening Dan Harris Open in Baldwin City, Kan., Sunday. A total of four Bees reached the quarterfinals in their respective weight classes.

St. Ambrose had two reach the quarters at 125 pounds. NAIA qualifier Mick Chagnon needed less than four minutes total to win his first two matches by pinfall. He fell 13-8 to end his run in the quarterfinals. Steele Dias also won two matches in the 125-pound bracket. He won by fall in 1:43 then won his second-round match 10-8 before falling 7-0.

Riley Woods earned a pair of decisions, one 5-4, the other 8-4, to reach the quarters at 141 pounds. There, he lost a tight 2-0 decision. Daniel Terronez also fell by just two points in a 9-7 decision in the quarterfinals at 149 pounds. He won his first two bouts by fall in 3:46 and via a 9-6 decision.

Diego Machado had a nice run at 157 pounds. After a first-round bye, he earned a 7-0 decision to reach the third round. After getting knocked into the consolation bracket, Machado claimed a forfeit and a medical forfeit before ultimately losing in the sixth consolation round. Jeremiah Morris won three matches in his bracket. The heavyweight earned a 6-2 decision before getting bumped into the consolation bracket. Morris came back with a 3-2 decision then won via disqualification before stepping aside via injury default.

Parker Terronez won a pair of matches in dominating fashion in the consolation bracket at 157 pounds. He won by tech fall 22-3 and then pinned his opponent in 1:32 before ending his day in the fifth consolation round. Chris Bridges collected two pins in under a minute each in his run at 174 pounds.

Ariel Vega won by fall in 2:02 at 125 pounds. Blake Dirksen won 9-8 at 149 pounds and Slade Dias recorded a 9-5 victory at 157 pounds in other wins for the Bees.

Cael Grell (157 pounds), Ethan Blair (165), Jayden Terronez (165), Thade Gottschalk (174), Jack Merlo (174), Dylan Meiners (184), Tyler Casey (197), Michael Witt (285) and Abdullah Razzak (285) also competed for St. Ambrose.

The Bees will make their home debut Wednesday with duals against Cornell at 7:30 p.m. and Iowa Wesleyan at 9 p.m.
