Bees fall to Tigers in CCAC Tournament

St. Ambrose saw its season come to an end Tuesday in a 25-14, 27-25, 25-20 loss at Olivet Nazarene in the first round of the CCAC Tournament.

The Bees ran into a hot Tigers team that finished with 58 total kills and hit at a .413 clip. SAU, meanwhile, totaled 31 kills and hit .216. Olivet Nazarene (14-10) put down at least 20 kills in both the first and second sets.

St. Ambrose matched ONU point for point in the second. Down 24-22, the Bees fought off a pair of set points and ultimately tied the set at 24-24 on a Mikolaj Zielonka kill. SAU erased a third set point at 25-24 before falling 27-25.

The Bees were in a 6-1 hole to start the third and trailed by six points as late as 14-8. The deficit was 16-11 before St. Ambrose made a run. Kills from Zielonka and Nick Fox and a pair of Tiger hitting errors came as part of a 5-0 spurt that knotted the score at 16-16. After the teams traded the next four points, Charlie Flynn and Cael Anderson teamed for a block that put SAU in front 19-18. A Jon Guch kill kept the Bees in front at 20-19. But that proved to be the team's final point of the year as ONU won the next six points to advance to the CCAC Tournament semifinals Friday.

Zielonka led the Bees with 11 kills. Fox put down eight and Flynn finished with seven. Guch added four.

Anthony Anderson had a team-best 24 assists. Andreas Indicatti Mariani recorded three.

Anthony Anderson also led the team with six digs, a number matched by Dillon Markley. Ethan Karban picked up five digs and Zielonka added four.

St. Ambrose ends with an 8-26 record.
