One rally not enough in five-set loss to Trolls

Down two sets, St. Ambrose bounced back to force a decisive fifth set, but the Bees couldn't rally a second time in a 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 15-8 loss to Trinity Christian Tuesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

After dropping the tightly-contested second set, the Bees fought back. SAU had nine kills against just two errors for a .368 hitting percentage in the third set, and collected 12 kills and four errors for a .308 mark in the fourth.

But momentum was immediately ripped away as Trinity Christian (5-7, 1-3 CCAC) opened the fifth set with the first six points. St. Ambrose (5-23, 0-5 CCAC) battled back to get within four points twice - the first time at 8-4 on a Zander Larson kill and the second time coming at 9-5 following a kill from Jon Guch. The Trolls answered Guch's kill with a pair of points before closing out the match soon after.

SAU had five kills and not a single hitting error in the final set, but that wasn't enough to keep pace with a Trinity team that registered 10 kills against one error in the set.

Guch led the Bees with 18 kills. He had just one hitting error to hit .515 for the match. Nick Fox also had a big night, totaling 12 kills and one error to hit at a .611 clip.

Cael Anderson recorded seven kills, Larson had five and Charlie Flynn put down four. Anthony Anderson, Andreas Indicatti Mariani and Richard Reed IV were each credited with one kill.

Anthony Anderson led all players with 35 assists. Indicatti Mariani had eight. Ethan Karban picked up a team-best 13 digs. Dillon Markley had seven, Larson five, and Guch and Brandon Edwards had four apiece. Fox was in on five total blocks while Guch and Flynn each recorded four.

In a match featuring 34 combined serving errors, Anthony Anderson and Karban each had two of the Bees' seven total aces. The Trolls finished with 10 aces.

SAU will visit Roosevelt Thursday.
