Failure to close out second set haunts St. Ambrose

After dropping a competitive first set, St. Ambrose appeared poised to even the match. But the Bees were unable to capitalize on any of their six set points in the second in an eventual 25-19, 26-24, 25-11 home loss to Judson Tuesday night.

SAU had 13 kills and just two hitting errors in the second set after Charlie Flynn's kill put the team in front 24-18. But the Bees would not score again in the set. Judson (12-7, 2-1 CCAC) won the next eight points, thanks to two aces and two kills, to retake control.

St. Ambrose (1-19, 0-3 CCAC) could not regain momentum after that. The Eagles won eight of the first nine points of the third set and led by at least six points the rest of the way in winning in three sets.

Nick Fox led SAU with nine kills. Flynn and Jon Guch each added eight. Cael Anderson put down three and Mikolaj Zielonka ended with two.

Andreas Indicatti Mariani had a team-best 27 assists. Ethan Karban finished with three along with a team-high 11 digs. Mariani and Dillon Markley each picked up five digs.

The Bees will take a break from conference play and compete in the Kansas Wesleyan Coyote Classic in Salina, Kan., Friday and Saturday.
