SAU loses nail biter to the Wildcats

St. Ambrose hosted the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats (2-7) in their third home match of the year at Lee Lohman Arena. Previously in the season, St. Ambrose beat the Wildcats in four sets, earning a 3-1 decision. This match up resulted in another four-set game. The Bees come out strong taking the first set 25-18 then fell in three close sets, two sets within two points of each other, 23-25, 19-25, and 24-26.  

Culver-Stockton started the first by taking an early 5-1 lead, but the Bees rallied with the equalizer at 9-9. From then on, it was competitive throughout, no team ever leading by a margin more than four until St. Ambrose put their foot on the gas. The Bees earned three kills on the last four points scored to win set one 25-18.

Set two went to the Wildcats, but the set remained tight throughout. Both teams were tied up 16 times throughout this set with Culver-Stockton finally rallying off two points to end the set 25-23, tying the game at one set apiece. Set three resulted in a Bee loss of 19-25. The forth set saw long rallies with multiple lead changes when the Wildcats rallied off seven of the last ten points to end the game. St. Ambrose will get another chance at Culver-Stockton on March 15.

Leading the way was Mikolaj Zielonka, having 14 kills on the evening with only two errors. Following the way was Nick Fox with nine, Charlie Flynn with seven, Richard Reed IV with five, and Jon Guch with four. Anthony Anderson added three kills while Cael Anderson and Brandon Edwards each added one kill on the evening.

Anthony Anderson piloted the offense by collecting 34 of the team total 41 assists, a team high for the season. Andreas Indicatti Mariani chipped in three assists while Jon Guch, Charlie Flynn, Richard Reed IV, and Brandon Edwards each with one assist.

The libero, Ethan Karban slotted the top defensive spot by pocketing ten digs on the evening while playing all four sets. Zielonka in a close second with six digs and Reed with five digs. Guch, Anderson, Mariani, and Edwards all ended with three digs. Fox and Chausse both with one dig each. 

Next, the Fighting Bees will look for an upset when they host a doubleheader vs. #15 Mount Mercy at Lee Lohman Arena. The first game is set for 5 p.m. with the second game of the double header slated for 7 p.m.
