SAU drops pair of four-setters

St. Ambrose started a busy weekend by dropping a pair of four-set matches. SAU lost at Morningside 25-17, 25-27, 25-20, 25-18 before losing to Missouri Valley 25-15, 25-13, 20-25, 25-13 in a match played at Dordt.

Even a fairly strong start wasn't good enough for the Bees in the loss to Morningside (4-3). SAU had eight kills and just one hitting error in the first set, but the Mustangs were even better with 17 kills and three errors.

St. Ambrose was able to even the match at a set apiece. A Charlie Flynn kill erased a set point to knot the set at 25-25. After a Morningside hitting error, Brandon Edwards put down a kill to tie the match.

But the Mustangs responded to win the next two sets to close out the match.

Nick Fox led St. Ambrose with 13 kills. Jon Guch had 10 and Mikolaj Zielonka finished with seven. Flynn (four), Anthony Anderson (three) and Edwards (two) combined for nine kills.

Anderson led the team with 31 assists. Ethan Karban picked up 16 digs while Zielonka came up with 14. Dillon Markley added five.

The Bees closed Friday with the 3-1 loss to Missouri Valley, a team receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll.

Fox had a team-leading nine kills in a balanced attack. Flynn had seven, Guch six, Karban five, and Zielonka and Richard Reed IV four each. Andreas Indicatti Mariani had two while Edwards, Anderson and Ryan Hudson each collected one.

Anderson had 20 assists while Hudson and Indicatti Mariani had four apiece. Karban led the way with 13 kills while Zielonka and Anderson each finished with six.

St. Ambrose (1-7) will play host Dordt before facing No. 5 Grand View Saturday.
