St. Ambrose drops two at Clarke Tri-Match

St. Ambrose dropped both matches at a tri-match hosted by Clarke in Dubuque, Iowa, Saturday. The Bees fell to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 25-12 before later losing to Clarke 24-26, 26-24, 18-25, 25-21, 15-9.

In the match against the Pride, the Bees, up two sets to one, led 20-19 in the fourth on a Cael Anderson kill. A Clarke serving error gave SAU a 21-20 lead. But that proved to be the team's final point of the set. The Pride won five straight points to extend the match.

In the fifth, St. Ambrose led as late as 5-4 on another Anderson kill. Anderson's eighth kill of the match had the Bees within a point at 10-9. But again SAU stalled late. Like in the fourth set, the Pride won the final five points, this time to close out the match.

SAU actuallly finished with more kills (54 to 40) and a higher hitting percentage (.147 to .074) than Clarke. But the Pride doubled up the Bees in blocks (12 to 6) and took advantage of 21 SAU serving errors. Clarke also had nine aces compared to three for St. Ambrose.

Nick Fox led the Bees with 12 kills. Jon Guch had 11. Richard Reed recorded nine, Dan Rice had six, Matt Pettke put down four and Charlie Flynn added three.

Ethan Chausse led the team with 30 assists. Anthony Anderson passed out 18. Chausse also led the Bees with 15 digs. Pettke and Anthony Anderson each picked up nine. Reed had seven, Dillon Markley six and Jesse Moreno five.

Fox was the only Bee to reach double-digit kills against UHSP. He recorded 12. Flynn and Guch each had six. Rice and Reed finished with five apiece.

Chausse (16) and Anthony Anderson (13) combined for 29 of SAU's 35 assists. Chausse and Markley each registered seven digs.

St. Ambrose, now 5-18 overall, will return to CCAC action Tuesday at Trinity International.
