St. Ambrose loses to No. 14 Missouri Baptist

It's challenging enough to play a nationally-ranked opponent on the road, but it's even more difficult when that opponent has nearly a perfect start. Thanks to that fast start, No. 14 Missouri Baptist rolled to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 win over St. Ambrose in St. Louis, Mo., Saturday afternoon.

The Bees came out playing well, recording seven kills and just one hitting error in the opening set. But it was no match for a Spartan team that put down 16 kills against a single error for a remarkable .789 hitting percentage in the first set.

St. Ambrose was close early, tied at 6-6. But Missouri Baptist (12-6) followed with three straight points as part of a larger 7-1 run to build a 14-7 edge. MBU slowly pulled away from there.

The Spartans were able to break away in the later stages of the next two sets to hand the Bees their 10th straight loss.

Jon Guch led St. Ambrose with eight kills. Nick Fox put down seven. Charlie Flynn and Richard Reed each had two. Cael Anderson had the team's other kill.

Ethan Chausse had a team-leading 17 assists. Chausse, Flynn, Reed and Jake Powers each picked up two digs in the loss.

The Bees, now 4-15 overall, return to CCAC play Tuesday with a match at Trinity Christian.
