SAU drops CCAC match at Roosevelt

St. Ambrose let a set point slip away in the opening set. And even though the Bees rebounded to win the second, they ultimately fell in four sets at Roosevelt Tuesday night. The 27-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21 loss dropped SAU to 4-13 overall and 3-4 in the CCAC.

In that first set, St. Ambrose squandered an early five-point advantage but still led as late as 24-23. Roosevelt (6-10, 3-3) fought off the set point and earned one of its own. A Cael Anderson kill tied the score at 25-25 before the Lakers won two more in a row to steal the set.

SAU came through late in the second set. Tied at 20-20, Charlie Flynn put down a kill to give the Bees a lead that would not relinquish. Nick Fox followed with a block and a Roosevelt hitting error pushed the lead to 23-20. The Lakers got one point back before kills from Fox and Richard Reed gave the Bees the set.

SAU never gave itself a chance in the third. Nursing a 3-2 lead, the Bees surrendered eight straight points to fall behind 10-3. The Lakers maintained at least a five-point cushion the rest of the set.

A Jon Guch kill opened the fourth set but RU followed with five consecutive points. SAU bounced back and took a 10-9 lead on a block from Flynn and Reed. Trailing just 15-14, the Bees watched the Lakers win six of the next seven points to go in front 21-15. Flynn added two late kills to help St. Ambrose pull to within 24-21 before Roosevelt ultimately closed out the win.

Fox led SAU with 13 kills. Flynn and Reed each recorded 11. Guch had four and Colin Teresi added two in the loss.

Ethan Chausse led the team with 24 assists. Anthony Anderson was credited with 10. Dillon Markley (15) and Reed (10) each picked up double-digit digs. Teresi had seven digs and Jesse Moreno finished with six.

St. Ambrose will look to snap its eight-match losing streak Thursday at home against Olivet Nazarene.
