St. Ambrose drops four-setter at Calumet

St. Ambrose got off to a great start but couldn't hold off Calumet. The Crimson Wave rallied for an 18-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-16 victory in Whiting, Ind., Thursday night.

The Bees recorded double-digit kills in each of the four sets. They posted 13 kills against just three errors in the opening set, good for a .370 hitting percentage. The numbers didn't drop much over the next two sets (24 kills, seven errors, .315) but the Wave picked up their play.

"What a great match!" said SAU head coach Ray Green. "Definitely the best we have played this season statistically, competitively, and as a team. It's a very optimistic work in progress. I'm very proud of the boys tonight."

In a back-and-forth second set, SAU was down just 22-21 following a Charlie Flynn kill. But CCSJ won two straight points, and three of the final four, to even the match. The third set followed a similar script. The Bees were tied as late as 23-23 before the Wave closed things out.

St. Ambrose (4-9, 3-2 CCAC) slipped to hitting at a .222 clip in the fourth set while Calumet (4-2, 3-2 CCAC) put together its best set, hitting at a .478 mark. That allowed the Wave to close out the match in four.

Flynn and Dan Rice led SAU with 11 kills apiece. Mikolaj Zielonka put down eight, and Jon Guch and Cael Anderson each registered seven. Jake Powers was credited with two kills.

Ethan Chausse led the team with 22 assists. Anthony Anderson passed out 18. Dillon Markley had a team-best 15 digs. Cael Anderson picked up nine.

St. Ambrose will return home to host Saint Xavier Monday.
