St. Ambrose takes down Augustana 3-1

St. Ambrose got a big victory, and a little revenge, by closing the year with a 25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 25-19 win at rival Augustana Friday night.

Other than a hiccup in the third set, the Bees controlled play against a Viking team that defeated them early in the season.

The duo of Skyler Marushige (12 kills) and Jason Bageanis (10) combined for nearly half of SAU's 45 kills.

After taking the first set St. Ambrose was in a back-and-forth battle with Augustana. Trailing 21-19, the Bees turned to Marushige. The senior put down kills on five of SAU's final six points of the set to rally the team for a two-set lead.

Then in the fourth, after the Vikings (6-15) claimed the third, Bageanis registered kills on three of four points to help the Bees to a 12-8 lead. Nick Fox and Jeramie Gutierrez later had kills that along with a Jesse Moreno ace pushed the lead to 18-13. After Augustana closed to within 18-17, Jake PowersColin Teresi and Bageanis each had an ace as part of a match-closing 7-2 run.

Fox and Mikolaj Zielonka each recorded six kills in the win. Teresi finished with three.

Jake Snyder led all players with 36 assists. Richard Reed was credited with 12 digs and four assists. Marushige had seven digs.

St. Ambrose finished the season with a 10-17 record.
