Rally gets SAU a victory over Bluefield College

Down a set and trailing 15-13 in the fourth, St. Ambrose rallied for a come-from-behind victory over Bluefield College Sunday in the Bees' second match in Georgetown, Ky.

SAU bounced back to claim the fourth and then won the final five points of the match behind big games from Skyler MarushigeJason Bageanis and Jake Snyder to earn a 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11 win.

"It was a long trip, but well worth it," SAU head coach Ray Green said. "We improved with each match, connected with Michael Chipman from the 2009 class, and went 1-1 against two high-level teams. Our offense was impressive with Skyler and Jason connecting with Jake at a high pace both matches."

It was back-to-back kills from Jeramie Gutierrez that erased the two-point deficit in the fourth. Then two kills from Marushige that ultimately gave St. Ambrose a 19-17 lead. Leading 22-21, Bageanis and Snyder combined on a block and three points later, the Bees forced that decisive fifth set.

The teams exchanged points throughout the start of the fifth with Bluefield ultimately grabbing an 11-10 lead. That's when the Bees rallied for the final time. A Bageanis kill knotted the score at 11-11, and after three straight Ram hitting errors, a final Bageanis kill closed out the five-set victory.

Marushige totaled 29 kills against just seven errors for a .440 hitting percentage. Bageanis ended with a .455 mark after collecting 13 kills and just three errors. Snyder, who was third on the team with nine kills, handed out 50 assists.

Gutierrez finished with six kills, Dan Rice had four, Colin Teresi added three and Mikolaj Zielonka had two. Jesse Moreno had a team-best 13 digs. Teresi had all five of the Bees' aces.

The win came after a 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 loss to host and No. 14-ranked Georgetown Saturday.

Marushige led St. Ambrose with 11 kills. Gutierrez had seven and Bageanis five. Snyder was credited with 22 assists.

The Bees, now 9-14 overall, will return to conference play by hosting Calumet St. Joseph Tuesday at 7 p.m.
