St. Ambrose downs Roosevelt in three sets

In the start of a busy stretch that will feature seven matches over the next six days, St. Ambrose quickly took care of business in Lee Lohman Arena Tuesday night, rolling over Roosevelt 25-19, 25-16, 25-20.

The win, the Bees' second in a row, moved the team to 4-9 overall and 3-4 in the CCAC.

In its first three-set win of the season, SAU put together perhaps its most dominant performance of the year. The Bees collected 46 total kills against just 15 errors, good for a .419 hitting percentage. And they led comfortably throughout.

St. Ambrose won seven of the first 10 points to start the match. And after Roosevelt (0-12, 0-6 CCAC) closed to within three points at 16-13, two kills from Nick Fox, another from Richard Reed, and a block from Fox and Mikolaj Zielonka came part of a 5-1 run that opened up a 21-14 lead. Zielonka and Jeramie Gutierrez added kills from there to help the Bees close out the first set.

Zielonka, Gutierrez and Jason Bageanis had kills to help St. Ambrose to a fast 5-1 lead in the second. The Lakers rallied to go in front 8-6 before Bageanis took over. The senior put down kills on four of the next five points as the Bees won five straight to regain an 11-8 edge. RU stayed within striking distance, trailing 20-16 late, before kills from Gutierrez, Bageanis and Colin Teresi came as part of a set-closing five-point run.

The third set was tied at 5-5 before SAU began to pull away. Kills from Teresi and Jake Snyder and back-to-back aces from Skyler Marushige powered the Bees through a 7-0 run that opened a 12-5 lead. The Lakers got within 20-17 before two RU errors and a Fox block restored a 23-17 lead. The Bees closed out the win five points later.

Bageanis led St. Ambrose with nine kills. Teresi, Zielonka and Fox each had six while Gutierrez and Snyder had five apiece. Reed finished with four kills, Dan Rice had three and Matt Pettke recorded two.

Snyder led all players with 34 assists. Jesse Moreno picked up seven digs in the win.

SAU will look to even its record in conference play at a match at Olivet Nazarene Thursday. The Bees will then play in the William Penn Invitational Friday and Saturday before returning home to host No. 10 Lourdes Sunday.
