St. Ambrose earns Senior Night victory

Playing at home for the final time this season, St. Ambrose made sure its six seniors went out with a win.

The Bees recovered from a slow start to post a 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 win over Viterbo Thursday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

Prior to the match, the Bees recognized their six seniors - Avery Clark, Jaylen Clark, Drew Hamlin, Jake Snyder, Ricardo Ubior and Dom Marshall.

Then SAU came out a little sluggish, dropping the first four points of the match. The deficit grew to 17-11 before St. Ambrose made a bit of a rally to get to withing 23-22 on a Snyder kill. But back-to-back V-Hawk points put the Bees in a one-set hole.

From that point, the Bees returned to form. Leading just 13-11 in the second, kills from Hamlin and Skyler Marushige started a five point run that carried the team to the 25-17 win.

SAU trailed 19-17 late in the third before a block from Jaylen Clark and Nick Fox changed momentum. Consecutive hitting errors from Viterbo gave St. Ambrose the lead. Another kill from Jaylen Clark and a block from Fox and Dan Rice opened up a 22-19 lead. That was enough to get SAU through the set for a 2-1 lead.

The Bees had to overcome another late two-point deficit in the fourth. Trailing 20-18, kills from Jason Bageanis and Jaylen Clark tied the match. The two points came as part of a 6-1 run that gave SAU a 24-21 lead. A kill from Fox two points later closed out the win.

Jaylen Clark led all players with 19 kills. Bageanis added 11. Marushige recorded six and Snyder and Hamlin each had four.

Snyder had a match-best 38 assists. Avery Clark picked up 14 digs, Ubior had 12 and Jaylen Clark and Harry Khaira each registered eight.

St. Ambrose will close the regular season with a pair of conference road matches. First, the Bees will visit Roosevelt Saturday before facing Cardinal Stritch next Tuesday. The CCAC Tournament will be played Apr. 2-3.
