Bees shake off poor start to defeat Statesmen

St. Ambrose recovered from a poor first set to completely dominate the next three in a 14-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-16 win over William Penn Thursday afternoon in Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees totaled 38 kills against just 10 attack errors over the final three sets. The Statesmen had 21 kills and 24 hitting errors over the same period.

Ricardo Ubior helped serve St. Ambrose to a 4-0 lead in the second. Back-to-back blocks from Skyler Marushige, the second one assisted by Nick Fox, came as part of a three-point run that opened up a 13-6 lead. With the advantage at 19-13, Jake Snyder put down a kill and then served out the rest of the set.

Ubior again served the Bees to a 4-0 lead in the third. A Marushige kill extended the lead to 12-3 and SAU led comfortably the rest of the way.

William Penn (10-12), a team receiving votes in the NAIA top-10 poll, put together a good start in the fourth, taking a 4-3 lead. Kills from Jaylen Clark and Jason Bageanis started an 8-1 run that gave St. Ambrose an 11-5 lead. The Bees were not threatened the rest of the way.

Clark led all players with 11 kills. Bageanis gave SAU two players in double figures with 10 kills. Marushige was credited with eight, Fox had five and Jeramie Gutierrez added three.

Snyder had a team-leading 33 assists and 10 digs. Avery Clark picked up nine digs and Jaylen Clark had seven.

SAU returns to conference play Saturday with a 5 p.m. match at Judson.
