Bees stumble against Trolls

St. Ambrose fell to 5-11 overall and 2-3 in the CCAC following a 3-0 loss Wednesday night at Trinity Christian, a team receiving votes in the NAIA top-10 poll.

The Bees were right there in the 25-23, 27-25, 25-20 loss to the Trolls, especially in the first two sets.

Despite falling behind 10-3, SAU battled back to get within 22-21 late on a Jaylen Clark kill. A Skyler Marushige kill kept the deficit at a single point at 23-22, and then a TCC hitting error evened the score. But that would be the Bees' final point of the set as the Trolls won the next two to claim the opener.

St. Ambrose led for a large portion of the second set. The advantage was 20-15 following a Jason Bageanis kill. Trinity caught SAU at 21-21 and fought off a Bee set point at 24-23. SAU was able to erase the first TCC set point, but not the second as the Trolls took a two-set lead.

SAU struggled out of the gate in the third, losing seven of the first eight points. The Bees were able to get as close as 21-18 before the Trolls ultimately earned the win.

Clark led St. Ambrose with 16 kills. Marushige finished with 10 and Bageanis added nine. Jake Snyder had 36 assists and Ricardo Ubior picked up 14 digs in the loss.

The Bees return home to host Roosevelt next Wednesday.
