St. Ambrose suffers five-set setback at William Penn

St. Ambrose's win streak was halted on Saturday night in Oskaloosa, Iowa. After winning the first two sets, the Bees couldn't close out the match as they fell 25-18, 25-20, 17-25, 15.25. 13-15 to William Penn.

SAU found themselves down early in the first set but rallied to take the lead scoring four straight points with kills from Avery Clark, Jason Bageanis, Skyler Marushige, and a block from Bageanis and Marushige to take the lead at 15-14. The teams traded points until a William Penn service error gave the Bees for good. St. Ambrose scored five straight points to take the first set.

The Bees never trailed in the second set, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead with kills from Clark, Marushige, and a block from Myles Hudson and Marushige. With the game tied at 11, SAU got kills from Jaylen Clark, Marushige, and an ace from Ricardo Ubior, which forced William Penn to call a timeout. St. Ambrose would take it from there with A. Clark ending the set on a kill.

The third set was back-and-forth for a while, but at 16-all, William Penn would go on a 6-0 run to put the set out of reach for the Bees. After taking a one-point lead early in the fourth, SAU couldn't find their rhythm as the Statesmen would take a four-point lead that would only grow. In the fifth, St. Ambrose found themselves only down by one, but a William Penn kill and a Bees attacking error gave the Statesmen all the room they needed.

Marushige had a game-high 20 kills, and Bageanis added 18 for SAU. Jake Snyder put up 43 assists and was the team leader in digs with 13. Ubior collected 12.

St. Ambrose's next match will be on March 2nd as they take on conference opponent Trinity Christian in Palos Heights, Ill. at 8 p.m.
