SAU gets wins over UHSP and Clarke

St. Ambrose garnered two victories at the SAU Tri-Match on Saturday in Davenport. The Bees swept University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in the first match winning 25-12, 25-10, 25-22. SAU then defeated Clarke 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20.

In their first match of the day, St. Ambrose jumped out to an early lead against UHSP with kills from Nick Fox, Skyler Marushige, and a block from Fox and Jeramie Gutierrez. The Bees would go on a late 9-0 run in the set with kills from Gutierrez, Jason Bageanis, and an ace from Ricardo Ubior. Colin Teresi finished the set with a kill. The second set was more of the same with SAU jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Another Ubior ace and kills from Gutierrez, Bageanis, Marushige, and Teresi extended the lead, and Gutierrez ended the set with a kill. The third set was much tighter with the Bees even falling behind at 8-6 until a kill from Fox and one from Drew Hamlin tied it up. The teams continued back-and-forth until a Bageanis kill at 21-all put St. Ambrose ahead for good.

Jake Snyder had a match-high 33 assists, while Bageanis put down 12 kills. Ubior was the leader in digs with 11.

SAU's second match of the day saw them avenge an earlier loss to Clarke. It looked like the Bees would be able to take the first set against the Pride, but at set-point, Clarke reeled off seven straight points to claim the set. The second set saw SAU down by as much as five points early on, but kills from Jaylen Clark, and an ace from Jake Snyder got St. Ambrose within two. Kills from Skyler Marushige, Clark, Avery Clark, Jason Bageanis, and a block from Nick Fox and Marushige helped the Bees reclaim the set lead which they would never lose. St. Ambrose took control early in the third set leading by seven points after kills from Fox, Marushige, and a block from Fox and A. Clark which forced the Pride to take a timeout. Snyder closed out the set with a block. The fourth set again saw the Bees take over early with kills from J. Clark and Bageanis to give them a 13-7 lead. From there SAU scored four straight points and never looked back as the match ended on a Bageanis kill.

Snyder had 39 assists to go along with seven digs and three aces. Jaylen Clark had 12 kills followed by Marushige with 11. Ubior picked up 13 digs and Avery Clark had 7.

St. Ambrose will travel to La Crosse, Wis. on Tuesday, Feb. 16 for a conference match against Viterbo at 7 p.m.
