SAU drops three matches at Molten Invitational

St. Ambrose remained winless on the season after dropping three matches at Grand View's Molten Invitational Friday and Saturday. The losses to Dordt, Ottawa (Ariz.) and Jamestown (N.D.) moved the Bees to 0-8 overall.

The Bees' best chance came in the opener, a 25-18, 16-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-13 setback to Dordt Friday afternoon.

After splitting the first four sets, SAU led 10-9 in the fifth. After Dordt won two straight points, the teams exchanged points with the Bees pulling even at 13-13 on a Skyler Marushige kill. A Defenders kill gave them a match point and they capitalized thanks to an SAU hitting error.

Marushige led St. Ambrose with 11 kills. Jaylen Clark and Jeramie Gutierrez each had eight kills and Jason Bageanis added seven. Harry Khaira led the Bees with 31 assists. Clark had 11 digs and Ricardo Ubior picked up eight.

Later Friday, SAU fell to Ottawa, a team receiving votes in the NAIA top-10 poll, 25-16, 25-19, 25-22.

Marushige again led the way, this time finishing with nine kills. Gutierrez and Colin Teresi each recorded five, and Bageanis and Nick Fox had three apiece. Khaira collected 21 assists and Ubior registered five digs.

St. Ambrose closed the two-day event Saturday with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 loss to No. 8 Jamestown.

Marushige posted a match-best 13 kills. Bageanis finished with four kills and Clark and Gutierrez each had three. Khaira was credited with all 25 of the team's assists and added four digs. Ubior also had four digs.

St. Ambrose returns to CCAC play Tuesday when the Bees host No. 9 Saint Xavier.
