SAU Tennis travels to Hilton Head for Spring Break trip
The St. Ambrose men's and women's tennis teams are heading to Hilton Head, S.C., to play a few matches on their Spring Break trip. Each team will compete three times.
Saturday
College of Wooster 8, St. Ambrose men 1
Gianfranco Garcia Medina and Jaime Febres scored the lone win for the Bees with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. Despite the loss, the Bees were competitive in singles play. Brian Lelm dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles and Gabriel Guimaray dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles. The Bees would win just 13 games across the other four singles matches.
Sunday
St. Ambrose men 5, Nazareth 4
St. Ambrose won four out of the six singles matches to earn a narrow victory. The Bees were down 2-1 after doubles, with Lelm and Guimaray getting the Bees on the board with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. In singles, Lelm set the tone for the Bees with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. The top of the Bees lineup was the difference as the Bees got wins at two, three and four singles. Guimaray won 6-4, 6-0, Garcia won 6-4, 6-1, and Febres won 6-3, 6-3.
Nazareth 5, St. Ambrose women 4
Jenna Smithmeyer and Paige Owens got the Bees on the board with a win at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-2. Smithmeyer and Owens would each follow that up with a win each in singles as well. Smithmeyer won 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, and Owens won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Julia Turek lost a close 6-4, 6-3 match at No. 1 singles. The Bees would win just two games across the other three singles matches.
Tuesday
St. Ambrose men 7, Western New England 2
The Bees jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles thanks to wins by Lelm and Guimaray by a score of 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, and a win by Garcia and Febres by a score of 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Connor Leibforth and Cade Timmons dropped a close 8-3 decision at No. 3 doubles. The Bees clinched the dual by winning five out of the six singles matches. Lelm won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, Guimaray won a close match 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 at No. 2, Garcia won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Febres won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, and Leibforth won 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 at No. 6.
St. Ambrose women 7, Western New England 2
With wins with Smithmeyer and Owens 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and Kate Jones and Sarah Baxter 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, the Bees took a 2-1 lead after doubles. The Bees lost just one match during singles play. Turek won 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 at No. 1 singles, Owens won 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 at No. 3 singles, Jones won 0-6, 7-5, 10-3 at No. 4 singles, Audrey Pender won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and Sophie Parr won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
