St. Ambrose splits duals to open spring slate
St. Ambrose returned to the courts for its spring season Saturday in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The Bees swept Simpson 9-0 before losing to host Cornell 5-4.
Brian Lelm and Gabriel Guimaray battled for an 8-7 (7-2) win at No. 1 doubles in the victory over Simpson. Gianfranco Garcia Medina and Jaime Febres won the No. 2 match 8-4. The No. 3 team of Connor Leibforth and Marcus Lang won by forfeit.
The Bees swept the five competed singles matches, dropping a total of just 18 games.
Febres didn't drop a game in his 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Leibforth won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 and Guimaray was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 2. Garcia Medina was pushed in the first set in his evental 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 and Lelm completed the sweep with his 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1. Lang won the No. 6 singles match by forfeit.
SAU won two of the three doubles matches but couldn't hold on in singles play in the loss to Cornell.
Lelm and Guimaray won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and the No. 2 team of Garcia Medina and Febres needed a tiebreaker in their 8-7 (7-2) victory.
Febres came back with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 4 singles. Leibforth cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6. Garcia Medina won the first set before falling 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3.
St. Ambrose (6-3) will host Central Friday at the QC Tennis Club.
