Bees pick up 5-2 win over Cornell

Behind four singles wins, St. Ambrose was able to defeat Cornell 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Davenport West.

Three of the four victories came in straight sets, led by Nathan Harris's dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Benedikt Rake dropped just two games in his 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2. Jaime Febres claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4. The other SAU win came in a third-set super-tiebreaker as Gianfranco Garcia Medina outlasted his opponent at No. 3 singles 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-6.

The Bees nearly swept singles play, losing twice in third-set breakers after winning the first set. Brian Lelm fell 1-6, 6-3, 11-9 at No. 1 singles and Connor Leibforth fell 2-6, 6-1, 11-9 at No. 6.

St. Ambrose (3-2) also earned the doubles point. Lelm and Rake teamed for a 7-6 (7-1) win at No. 1 and Harris and Leibforth came through with a 6-2 win at No. 3. 

SAU will close the fall with a pair of home duals next week. The Bees will host Wisconsin Lutheran Friday and Buena Vista Saturday.
