St. Ambrose defeats Dubuque and Simpson

St. Ambrose defeats Dubuque and Simpson

It took St. Ambrose just three duals to match last year's win total. The Bees defeated Dubuque 7-0 and Simpson 4-3 Saturday at Davenport West to move to 2-1 on the year. The Bees won only two duals all of last year.

SAU had little problem taking down Dubuque to start the day.

Greyson Piotrowski was extended to a third-set super-tiebreaker in his match at No. 4 singles. He prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.

The other five singles matches were all decided in straight sets.

Matt Zuccato did not surrender a game in his 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. Brian Lelm dropped a single game in his 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1. Jack Schieferdecker breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Caleb Hoffman earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 and James Boustead completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6.

Zuccato and Connor Leibforth earned a 6-0 shutout at No. 3 doubles. Lelm and Piotrowski were 6-1 winners at No. 1 and Schieferdecker and Hoffman teamed for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Doubles proved key in SAU's 4-3 win over Simpson later in the day.

Lelm and Piotrowski's 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles gave the Bees the crucial point after Zuccato and Leibforth cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 3.

The two teams split the six singles matches.

Lelm (6-2, 6-2) and Jacob Decker (6-3, 6-1) won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Hoffman prevailed 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 3.

Schieferdecker (No. 2) and Piotrowski (No. 4) fell in three sets in their matches.

St. Ambrose is next scheduled to host Wisconsin Lutheran and Buena Vista on Oct. 9.
