Men and women swim past Midland

St. Ambrose returned home to swim against Midland Saturday afternoon at the Central Natatorium. The Bee men won 218-49 while the women won 198-49.

Brett Jones won both men's freestyle sprints. He took the 50-yard free in 21.06 seconds and the 100 free in 46.44 seconds. Cory Werrett was second and Panagiotis Pappous third in the 50 free, and Benny Zarhin and Pappous were second and third in the 100 free. Egoitz Munoz Moreno won both backstroke races. He won the 100-yard back in 51.85 seconds and the 200 back in 1:57.17. Carter Gaber and Marat Usov finished second and third in the 100, and Garret Sims and Ryan Safta were second and third in the 200. Mikhi Hassim also won a pair of events, touching the wall in 56.81 seconds to win the 100-yard breaststroke and winning the 100-yard butterfly in 48.77 seconds. Sims placed third in the 100 breast while Sebastian Pereira and Walter de Jongh were second and third in the 100 fly.

SAU also took the top three places in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. Vincent Meo won the 200 free in 1:53.84, just ahead of Sam Gillham and Jay Miller. Jonas Friess claimed the 200 IM in 1:57.93, beating de Jongh and David Schneider. Jonathan Rollwa (2:17.70) and Truitt Landolt took the top two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke. Bram Mess (212.85) and Lane Otte were one-two in the 1-meter diving event. Usov won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.18. Luke Sproule placed third. Khalil Ruiz was the champion in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing in 4:46.15. Rollwa and Landolt were second-third in the 1650-yard freestyle, and Sproule and Carson Maxwell took the same spots in the 200-yard butterfly.

The Bees also took the top three spots in both relays. Werrett, Jones, Hassim and Friess won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:04.92. The team of Pappous, Rollwa, Munoz Moreno and Thomas Noller were second, and Usov, Sims, Gonzalo Saenz and Pereira finished third. Munoz Moreno, Werrett, Hassim and Jones took the 200-yard medley relay in 1:32.63. Gaber, Noller, Javier Santiago and Nikolai Valencia were runners-up, and Safta, Ben Patterson, de Jongh and Skylar Drolema placed third.

Like Jones did for the men, Anna Gute won both freestyle sprints on the women's side. She touched in 25.19 seconds to win the 50 free and 54.98 seconds to win the 100 free. Bryn Kiley was third in the 100. Kiley won the 200 free in 1:59.91 with Madeline Piper placing second. St. Ambrose won every women's freestyle race as Grace Bobeldyk took the 500 in 5:21.43 and Annaliese Bowser won the 1650 in 19:28.67. Bowser was also runner-up in the 500. The 500 was one of two event wins for Bobeldyk, who also won the 200 IM in 2:16.58. Molly Duehr was second and Amber Warak third.

Bridget O'Grady and Irene Artabe also each won a pair of individual events. Artabe took the 100 back in 1:00.57 with Gute placing third. Artabe also won the 100 fly in 1:01.37, ahead of O'Grady and Kiley. O'Grady won both the 100-yard (1:06.81) and 200-yard (2:33.21) breaststroke races. Leyre Antonanzas and Duehr were second and third in the 100 breast, and Kate Henson and Hannah Blackmore were second and third in the 200. Antonanzas was the winner of the 400 IM in 4:38.83. The other Bee winner was Caitlin Pieroni, who took the 200 fly in 2:27.76. Emily Henson was second. Amanda Beuth and Pieroni finished two-three in the 200 back.

Artabe, O'Grady, Antonanzas and Gute won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:49.67. Beuth, Duehr, Rylie Steinkamp and Schyon Drolema were second. RIley Loeffler, Kate Henson, Warak and Marin Powell finished third. The 400-yard freestyle relay team on Duehr, Kiley, Bobeldyk and Drolema won in 3:45.90. Steinkamp, Bowser, Warak and Powell were third.

After a training trip to Phoenix, Ariz., in early January, the Bees will return to action at the Grinnell Invitational Jan. 19-20.
