St. Ambrose competes at Davenport Duals

St. Ambrose traveled to Kentwood, Mich., to compete in the Davenport Duals Friday and Saturday. The Bees earned several top-three finishes.

The SAU men won three individual events Friday while competing against Davenport. Benny Zarhin touched the wall in 47.44 seconds to win the 100-yard freestyle. Panagiotis Pappous came in third in 47.72 seconds. Egoitz Munoz Moreno won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 52.65 seconds. The other Bee champion was Marat Usov, who won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:06.75.

Usov also took second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.60, right ahead of Jonas Friess (4:46.79), who placed third. SAU also took second and third in the 100-yard butterfly. Mikhi Hassim was the runner-up in 50.79 seconds and Juan Gomez took third in 52.44 seconds.

Cory Werrett won silver in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.21 seconds. Friess was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.41 and Jonathan Rollwa placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:20.05.

Munoz Moreno, Sebastian Pereira, Hassim and Werrett were third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:35.44. Hassim, Zarhin, Brett Jones and Werrett (3:07.68) were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay, and Pappous, Friess, Rollwa and Nikolai Valencia (3:12.16) took third.

Bryn Kiley earned a pair of top-three finishes for the Bee women Friday as the Bees battled both Davenport and Eastern Illinois. She was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:18.41 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.47.

Grace Bobeldyk was runner-up in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in 10:54.58. Irene Artabe also grabbed second place in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.19.

Anna Gute placed third in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.14 seconds. Bridget O'Grady took third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.74. Leyre Antonanzas was third in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:38.76.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Artabe, O'Grady, Antonanzas and Gute placed third in 1:50.38.

Kiley came back Saturday and won the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:15.79. Antonanzas took second in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.44) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.35).

SAU got third-place efforts from Gute in the 50-yard freestyle (25.05), O'Grady in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.11) and Artabe in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.71).

Gute, Bobeldyk, Kiley and Artabe teamed for third place in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:42.93. Artabe, O'Grady, Antonanzas and Gute took third in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:00.02.

The men won three more events Saturday. Gomez claimed the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.40. Friess won the 1650-yard freestyle in 16:48.19. Werrett won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.25 seconds as Zarhin placed third in 21.90 seconds.

Zarhin was runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.32 seconds. Friess was third in 48.04. Usov was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.15 and third in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.23. Gomez took third in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:57.71.

St. Ambrose also won both men's relays Saturday. Hassim, Jones, Carter Gaber and Werrett took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:25.45. Pappous, Zarhin, Friess and Skylar Drolema were third in 1:26.03. Munoz Moreno, Pereira, Hassim and Werrett won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:32.07. Carter Prull, Thomas Noller, Javier Santiago and Pappous (3:36.38) were second, and Gaber, Tayden Blair, Gomez and Jones (3:38.75) finished third.

SAU will return home to host Quincy Friday.
