SAU opens the 2023-24 season with dual vs. Olivet Nazarene

St. Ambrose opened its 2023-24 season by hosting Olivet Nazarene at the Davenport Central Natatorium Saturday. The Bee men defeated the Tigers 153-62 while the women fell 139-65.

Eight different SAU men each won a different individual event. Egoitz Munoz Moreno led St. Ambrose to a 1-2-3 finish in the 100-yard backstroke. He won in 54.48 seconds, while Carter Gaber was second in 55.37 and Michael Taylor was third in 56.97.

Brett Jones (22.08 seconds) and Cory Werrett (48.15 seconds) won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races, respectively. Gaber was third in the 50 free in 22.37 seconds and Benny Zarhin was runner-up in the 100 free in 48.64 seconds. In the 1650-yard freestyle, Jonas Friess won in 17:22.34 while teammate Jonathan Rollwa was second in 17:41.89.

The Bees also claimed the top two spots in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke. Mikhi Hassim won the 100 fly in 50.45 seconds with Juan Gomez second in 54.45. Gomez also placed third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.97. Sebastian Pereira touched the wall first in 1:02.35 in the 100 breast as Walter de Jongh was just behind in 1:02.38.

Marat Usov was the champion in the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 1:59.03. Pereira was third in 1:59.68. Usov also took second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:49.78 and Friess was third (4:59.13).

Bram Mess was the other men's winner, taking the 1-meter diving event with a score of 225.25. Lane Otte was second.

Munoz Moreno, Pereira, Hassim and Werrett won the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.91) and Panagiotis Pappous, Hassim, Zarhin and Werrett won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.35).

Anna Gute was the lone Bee winner on the women's side. She won gold in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.29 seconds.

Bryn Kiley was runner-up in two races. She touched the wall in 2:01.80 in the 200-yard freestyle and had a time of 5:25.14 in the 500-yard freestyle. Grace Bobeldyk was third in the 500 free in 5:28.23. Bobeldyk also earned a second-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle in 19:00.78. Annaliese Bowser (20:38.17) was third.

Bridget O'Grady posted a time of 1:08.25 to take second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Molly Duehr was third in 1:12.05. O'Grady was also third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.24. Irene Artabe (1:02.18 in the 100-yard backstroke) and Leyre Antonanzas (2:12.06 in the 200-yard individual medley) added second-place efforts.

The team of Artabe, O'Grady, Antonanzas and Gute took second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.94, and Artabe, Antonanzas, Gute and Kiley were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:46.17.

After an intrasquad/alumni meet on Sept. 30, St. Ambrose will host Lewis in a dual at Davenport Central on Oct. 6.
