St. Ambrose at NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships

St. Ambrose is sending 18 to the 2023 NAIA Women's Swimming & Diving National Championships that get underway Wednesday in Columbus, Ga.

The Bees have 11 men competing - Juan Gomez, Mikhi Hassim, Ryan Joehl, Brett Jones, Petter Kolaas, Bram Mess, Egoitz Munoz Moreno, Grant Nelson, Ryan Warrick and Benny Zarhin. The list includes Leo Edwards, who is an alternate. On the women's side, Leyre Antonanzas, Irene Artabe, Grace Bobeldyk, Molly Duehr, Bryn Kiley, Bridget O'Grady and Kait Zucco are representing St. Ambrose.

Saturday, March 4

The final day of the NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships featured more All-American finishes for the Bees. Kait Zucco was fifth in the women's 1-meter diving event, finishing with a final score of 175.40. Juan Gomez also earned a top-eight finish. He was sixth in the men's 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.58.

St. Ambrose had several individuals swim in the B Finals Friday. Molly Duehr placed 11th in the women's 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.30. Bridget O'Grady took 14th in 2:26.53. Ryan Joehl finished 13th in the men's 200-yard backstroke. He touched the wall in 1:52.33. Egoitz Munoz Moreno's time of 1:58.02 was good for 16th. Ryan Warrick added a 15th-place effort in the men's 100-yard freestyle in 46.34 seconds. 

Benny Zarhin, Warrick, Mikhi Hassim and Joehl teamed for a sixth-place showing in the men's 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:04.23. Irene Artabe, Bryn Kiley, Grace Bobeldyk and Leyre Antonanzas placed 10th in the women's event in 3:37.65.

The SAU men took seventh at the championships with 187 team points. The Bee women were 11th with 130 points.

Friday, March 3

Bram Mess earned his second national runner-up finish of the championships. Following his runner-up finish in the 3-meter diving competition Thursday, Mess got second in the 1-meter event Friday. He finished with a final score of 220.95. That was one of three All-American performances for the Bees on the day. Already an All-American in the 200-yard individual medley, Leyre Antonanzas added an All-American effort in the 400-yard IM, placing sixth in 4:31.67. Irene Artabe is also an All-American, taking eighth in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.05 seconds.

St. Ambrose earned points in several other events. Mikhi Hassim placed 13th in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.86 seconds. Egoitz Munoz Moreno was 13th in the 100-yard backstroke in 51.59 seconds. He edged Hassim, who was 15th in the 100 back in 51.77 seconds. Juan Gomez was 14th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.26. For the women, Bridget O'Grady placed 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.16.

Ryan Joehl, Petter Kolaas, Hassim and Benny Zarhin (3:26.88) were 10th in the men's 400-yard medley relay, while the women's team of Antonanzas, O'Grady, Artabe and Bryn Kiley (4:00.07) took 12th.

After Friday's events, the SAU men are in seventh place with 141 team points. The Bee women are 10th with 93 points.

Thursday, March 2

The St. Ambrose women crowned their first individual All-American of the Championships as Leyre Antonanzas finished eighth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.74. Irene Artabe qualified for the B Final and placed 11th in 2:08.08. Bryn Kiley just missed the A Finals of the 500-yard freestyle. Her time of 5:07.80 left her just 0.43 seconds out of a top-eight qualifying time. She settled for the B Final, where she took 16th in 5:16.08. The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Artabe, Kiley, Molly Duehr and Bridget O'Grady finished 13th in 1:41.34.

On the men's side, much like Kiley, Juan Gomez just missed the A Finals of the 500-yard freestyle. He qualified ninth in 4:36.10, 1.2 seconds out of eighth. He then took ninth overall, winning the B Final in a time of 4:34.92. Mikhi Hassim placed 14th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:52.77. Ryan Warrick, Hassim, Brett Jones and Petter Kolaas then took sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. They finished in 1:23.45.

Wednesday, March 1

St. Ambrose got off to a great start on the first day of the NAIA National Championships. Bram Mess is a National runner-up. He finished second in the men's 3-meter diving competition with a final score of 223.70. The Bees also earned team points in all four relays. Egoitz Munoz Moreno, Petter Kolaas, Mikhi Hassim and Ryan Warrick took seventh in the men's 200-yard medley relay. They finished in 1:31.93. Juan Gomez, Benny Zarhin, Ryan Joehl and Grant Nelson were ninth in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay in 6:52.91. The SAU women also had a ninth-place finish. Bryn Kiley, Grace Bobeldyk, Irene Artabe and Leyre Antonanzas were ninth in the 800 free relay in 7:48.68. Antonanzas, Bridget O'Grady, Artabe and Molly Duehr finished 12th in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:49.17. The Bee men are in sixth place with 59 points while the women are 11th with 28 points.
