Bees get several top times in winning Williams Baptist Tri-Meet

St. Ambrose won multiple events in dominating the Williams Baptist Tri-Meet in Pocahontas, Ark., Saturday.

The SAU men won 11 individual events and totaled 193 points to easily outdistance second-place Williams Baptist (53 points) and Bethel (22), while the Bee women won 10 events in scoring 168 points. The WBU women earned 66 points and Bethel had 16.

Six different St. Ambrose men each won an event with Juan Gomez leading the way with three individual titles. Gomez won both the 200- and 400-yard freestyle events. He had a time of 1:57.32 in the 200 free and finished the 400 in 4:11.06. Ryan Joehl was third in the 200 free, Leo Edwards took fourth and Ryan Warrick was fifth. Truitt Landolt, Joehl and Edwards were third, fourth and fifth in the 400 free. Gomez also won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:11.83, with William Walker-Rozo finishing second and Carson Maxwell third.

Joehl was the champion in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.73 seconds and the 200 back in 2:13.54. Joehl led a 1-2-3 charge in the 100 back as Mikhi Hassim took second in 1:00.05 and Egoitz Munoz placed third. 

Brett Jones led St. Ambrose to top three finishes in two events. He won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.13 seconds and the 100 free in 55.11 seconds. Zac Robinson was second and Warrick third in both events.

Jaden Dydell was the other two-event winner for the Bee men, taking both breaststroke finals. He won the 100 breast in 1:08.59, with Petter Kolaas coming in as the runner-up and Nikolai Valencia placing fourth. Dydell won the 200 in 2:36.90, edging Valencia, who was second.

Walker-Rozo won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:22.16 as Isaac Garcia finished third. Hassim touched the wall in 58.70 seconds to win the 100-yard butterfly. Jones, Walker-Rozo and Maxwell were third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Valencia (second), Kolaas (third) and Dydell (fifth) added top-five finishes in the 100-yard IM.

The Bees also won both relays Saturday. Joehl, Dydell, Hassim and Robinson won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:47.01. Munoz, Kolaas, Carmelo Patti II and Warrick were second. And the team of Jones, Robinson, Warrick and Hassim won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:40.58. Valencia, Joehl, Landolt and Patti were second.

Leyre Antonanzas was the top Bee individual on the day, winning four individual events on the women's side, including two backstroke swims. She took the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.89 and added the 200 back in 2:23.78. Caitlin Pieroni was second in the 200 back and fourth in the 100. Antonanzas won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:26.81 and also the 400-yard freestyle in 4:40.32. Lauren Williams was second and Amber Warak third.

Molly Duehr won two events, claiming both the 100-yard (1:21.96) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:58.51). Victoria Thorne was fourth in both events.

Lauren Williams was the other multi-event winner for St. Ambrose. She took the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:11.80.  Emily Hartman was second, Warak third and Kelly Baughman fourth. Williams also won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.23. Baughman, Duehr and Rylie Steinkamp were third, fourth and fifth.

Baughman helped the Bees take the top four spots in the 100-yard individual medley. Her winning time was 1:14.20. Duehr was second, Pieroni third and Madeline Piper finished fourth. Hartman was the other SAU winner. She took the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:52.73.

Baughman also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle. Duehr was second and Steinkamp ended fourth. Steinkamp was third in the 100-yard butterfly with Hartman taking fourth.

Antonanzas, Duehr, Baughman and Williams won the 200-yard medley relay in 2:08.34. Williams, Antonanzas, Baughman and Duehr also took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:55.62. Warak, Steinkamp, Pieroni and Hartman were second.

St. Ambrose will next compete in the Luther College Invite Jan. 8 in Decorah, Iowa.
