SAU gets strong performances at Coe Kohawk Invite

St. Ambrose had another strong showing at the three-day Coe Kohawk Invitational over the weekend.

Leyre Antonanzas led the Bee women with three individual first-place finishes. She won both the 200- and 400-yard individual medleys in times of 2:10.94 and 4:43.17. Emily Hartman was third in the 400 and fourth in the 200, while Caitlin Pieroni placed eighth in the 400 IM. Antonanzas also won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.41 seconds. Bethany Anderson took third and Molly Duehr was eighth.

Antonanzas added a runner-up effort in the 200-yard backstroke, with Anderson placing seventh.

Anderson touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly to win in 59.80 seconds.

Andrea Adam won the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 389.00. She also took second in the 1-meter event with a 392.35.

Duehr added a pair of second-place showings in the 100- (1:09.05) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.41).

Lauren Williams came in with four top-five finishes, including three third-place showings. She took third in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, and placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle. Duehr was seventh in the 50 free and eighth in the 200 free, and Anderson was eighth in the 100 free. 

Hartman added a fourth-place time in the 200-yard butterfly.

The SAU women also won a pair of relays. Antonanzas, Duehr, Hartman and Williams took the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:00.04, winning by less than a second. With Anderson in instead of Hartman, the Bees also claimed the 400-yard medley relay in 4:01.45. That same foursome also took second in the 200-yard medley relay.

Williams, Kelly Baughman, Duehr and Antonanzas were third in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and Williams, Marin Powell, Baughman and Antonanzas took fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Mikhi Hassim and Juan Gomez paced the St. Ambrose men by each winning a pair of events.

Hassim took the 100-yard individual medley in 52.05 seconds. He also won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.91 seconds. Ryan Joehl took third and Quincy Walker tied for sixth.

Gomez touched first in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:37.24 and again in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:52.99. Grant Nelson was sixth and Leo Edwards seventh in the 500 free, and William Walker-Rozo came in fifth in the 200 fly.

Joehl also earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.20. Egoitz Munoz was fourth, Garret Sims fifth and Walker eighth.

Rais Hassim collected runner-up finishes in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle. He edged his brother Mikhi, who took third in the 200 IM. Zac RobinsonCaleb Heiar, Joehl and Ryan Warrick finished fourth-seventh in the 100 free. The Hassim brothers also finished third and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. Rais was third, Mikhi was fourth and Victor Del Rio Foces took sixth.

Gomez was second in the 200-yard freestyle with Edwards, Joehl and Warrick taking sixth, seventh and eighth. Brett Jones led a string of Bees in the 50-yard freestyle. Jones was second, with Heiar taking fourth, Robinson sixth, Warrick seventh and Del Rio Foces eighth.

With a score of 311.70, Bram Mess was second in the men's 1-meter diving competition.

Jaden Dydell was third in the 100-yard breaststroke with Rais Hassim (sixth), Gabe Carlson (seventh) and Heiar (eighth) adding top-eight showings. Dydell was also fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke. Carlson was sixth and Nikolai Valencia placed seventh. Nelson was fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle. Walker-Rozo was eighth in that event and sixth in the 400-yard individual medley. Sims ended eighth in the 400 IM.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Walker, Rais HassimMikhi Hassim and Robinson set a pool record with their first-place time of 1:33.23. Jones, Heiar, Robinson and Warrick won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:23.74, and Joehl, Rais Hassim, Mikhi Hassim and Jones won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:27.92.

The Bees also won a pair of mixed events. Williams, Heiar, Duehr and Jones took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:32.56. Walker, Duehr, Mikhi Hassim and Williams won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:43.15.

St. Ambrose will next compete in the Williams Baptist Invitiational in College City, Ark., Dec. 10-11.
