Records fall at season-ending Collegiate Championships

With the NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships canceled, St. Ambrose wrapped up its 2020-21 season at the Collegiate Championships in Fort Pierce, Fla.

It was a successful week for the Bees as they set several school records.

Caleb Gaylor broke his own record in the 50-yard freestyle. His time of 21.10 seconds eclipsed his previous mark of 21.22 seconds set in March 2020. It earned him sixth place in the Collegiate Championships.

Justin Fales also reset his own school record. His preliminary-round time of 1:44.04 in the 200-yard freestyle broke his previous mark of 1:44.66 set last March. Fales finished eighth in the event.

Quincy Walker's lead leg in the 200-yard medley relay was the top time for St. Ambrose in the 50-yard backstroke. His time was 23.97 seconds, surpassing his previous record of 24.40 seconds set in March 2019.

William Walker-Rozo set a new St. Ambrose record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.51 in the prelims. It broke Nathan Kuszynski's previous record of 2:01.10 set in November 2017. Walker-Rozo finished sixth with a final-round time of 1:59.35.

The SAU men also set school records in three relays. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Gaylor, Zac Robinson, Rais Hassim and Reece Powell combined for a time of 1:24.61 to place fifth and break the previous school record of 1:24.75 set in March 2020. Gaylor, Ryan Joehl, Grant Nelson and Fales finished the 800-yard freestyle relay in 6:59.75 for fifth place. The previous record of 7:00.22 was set in March 2020. Also, Quincy Walker, Gabe Carlson, Powell and Gaylor took fifth in the 200-yard medley relay with a school-record time of 1:33.81. The old record set in March 2020 was 1:34.63.

Joehl finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.30. Fales also finished eighth in both the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.90 and the 1650-yard freestyle in 16:46.81. Nelson was seventh in the 1650 with a time of 16:46.38. Harrison Shanklin was third in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 173.75.

On the women's side, Molly Duehr set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke. Her time of 2:32.26, which placed her 10th overall, broke Molly Sullivan's old mark of 2:33.65 set in November 2019.

Austyn Goodale took second in the 1-meter diving with a score of 241.90. Teammate Taylor Madison was third in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

The Bee women also took fifth in all five relays.

Duehr, Audra Shoop, Shraddha Sudhir and Kelly Baughman had a time of 1:42.81 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Duehr, Baughman, Emily Hartman and Sudhir had a time of 3:49.99 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Duehr, Baughman, Sullivan and Hartman finished the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:18.84. Caitlin Pieroni, Sullivan, Baughman and Duehr had a time of 1:57.42 in the finals of the 200-yard medley relay and a time of 4:16.05 in the 400-yard medley relay.

The SAU men finished fourth and the women were fifth in the eight-team event.
