St. Ambrose wins duals at Coe

The St. Ambrose men and women took down Coe in a dual in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Saturday. The No. 9-ranked Bee men defeated Coe 176-45 while the SAU women won 128-80.

Rais Hassim and Nathan Kuszynski were each dual-event winners for the St. Ambrose men.

Hassim won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.57 seconds and took the 100-yard butterfly in 53.24 seconds. The Bees took the top five places in the 50 free with Caleb Gaylor, Petter Kolaas, Zac Robinson and Ryan Warrick following Hassim in order. William Walker-Rozo and Khalil Ruiz were fourth and fifth, respectively in the 100 fly.

Kuszynski won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.57 with Walker-Rozo taking second, Logan Devereaux placing third and Ruiz finishing fifth. Kuszynski also claimed the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.45. Justin Fales was the runner-up and Truitt Landolt placed third.

The St. Ambrose dominance continued across the board.

Five Bees finished within a second of each other as they grabbed the top five places in the 100-yard freestyle - Victor Del Rio Foces (48.60 seconds), Warrick (48.75), Leo Edwards (48.77), Ryan Joehl (48.95) and Petter Kolaas (49.25).

SAU finished 1-2-3-4 in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. Fales won the 200 free in 1:48.96 with Landolt, Tony Erramouspe and Isaac Garcia rounding out the top four. In the 100 breast, it was Gabe Carlson winning in 1:03.10, backed up by Carmelo Patti II, Devereaux and Noah Hoogestraat.

Grant Nelson won the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:14.42 with Edwards placing second. Garret Sims touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.40 seconds. Quincy Walker was second, David Hall third and Josh Hay fourth. Harrison Shanklin also won the men's 1-meter diving competition.

The men took the top five places in the 400-yard medley relay and finished 1-2 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Walker, Carlson, Kuszynski and Gaylor took the 400 medley relay in 3:38.27. Sims, Patti, Keagan Dolphin and Del Rio Foces were second. Gaylor, Del Rio Foces, Hassim and Edwards won the 400 free relay in 3:11.63, with Joehl, Robinson, Fales and Kolaas finishing second.

Taylor Madison helped the SAU women defeat Coe by winning the 1-meter diving competition and finishing second in the 3-meter event.

Four other Bees won individual events. Bethany Anderson won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.23, edging teammate Kelly Baughman, who finished second.

Molly Duehr took the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:25.63. Emily Hartman placed third and Jade Hoogestraat was fourth. Brooklyn Pottebaum's time of 1:04.13 was best in the 100-yard backstroke. Caitlin Pieroni was runner-up.

Audra Shoop was the other SAU champion. She took the 100-yard freestyle in 59.86 seconds. Delaney Janosek was second with a time of 1:00.11. Valentina Espinosa and Lily Barraza finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Shoop also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle. Shraddha Sudhir was third and Francesca Walker-Rozo ended fifth.

Pieroni and Victoria Thorne finished second-third in the 200-yard individual medley. The Bees took second (Espinosa), third (Thorne) and fourth (Sudhir) in the 100-yard breaststroke. Hartman was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle with Molly Sullivan placing third and Delaney Janosek getting fifth.

St. Ambrose also won both relays.

Anderson, Sullivan, Baughman and Duehr combined for a time of 4:14.61 in the 400-yard medley relay, and Duehr, Baughman, Anderson and Shoop had a time of 3:50.00 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Hartman, Pottebaum, Sullivan and Walker-Rozo were second in the 400 free relay.

The Bees will next host their lone home event of the year, the SAU Invite, Feb. 12-13 at Davenport Central.
