SAU returns to the pool at Midland Quad

St. Ambrose got its second semester underway by competing in a quadrangular hosted by Midland Saturday.

The SAU men, ranked No. 9 in the recent NAIA poll, won the event, defeating Midland, Morningside and Sterling with 592 points. The Bee women took third with 428 points.

The St. Ambrose men won three individual swimming events. Quincy Walker led a 1-2-3 Bee finish in the 100-yard backstroke by winning in 54.77 seconds. Victor Del Rio Foces was second in 54.81 seconds and Garret Sims was third in 54.94 seconds.

Ryan Joehl won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:55.80. Sims was runner-up in a time of 2:00.21.

The Bees also dominated the 500-yard freestyle. Nathan Kuszynski touched the wall first in 4:58.43, edging teammate Grant Nelson (4:58.47). Leo Edwards finished fourth and Truitt Landolt was fifth.

Harrison Shanklin won the 1-meter diving competition for the Bees.

SAU also grabbed several second-place finishes. Caleb Gaylor was runner-up in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.33) and the 50-yard freestyle (21.75). Gabe Carlson was third in the 100 breast in 1:01.44, while Zac Robinson and Logan Devereaux took third and fifth in the 50 free, respectively.

Joehl touched second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:46.15. Edwards was third and Kuszynski finished fourth. Walker added a second-place performance in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.77 seconds. Keagan Dolphin took fourth and Khalil Ruiz touched fifth. Del Rio Foces' time of 48.17 seconds was good for second in the 100-yard freestyle. Edwards was third in 48.63 seconds. William Walker-Rozo was second in the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:26.19 and Ruiz ended third in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.44.

St. Ambrose also took second in both relays, with Joehl, Carlson, Gaylor and Robinson taking second in the 200-yard medley relay, and Gaylor, Dolphin, Robinson and Del Rio Foces placing second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Molly Duehr won the 100-yard breaststroke for the SAU women. Her winning time was 1:10.77. Molly Sullivan was third in the event in 1:12.32.

Duehr (2:02.49) and Sullivan also finished second and fifth, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle.

Austyn Goodale took the 1-meter diving title while Taylor Madison was second.

Bethany Anderson took runner-up honors in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:01.67. Francesca Walker-Rozo was third in 1:05.44. Anderson also claimed third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.40. Brooklyn Pottebaum was fourth.

Caitlin Pieroni earned a pair of third-place finishes. She was third in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:20.25 and in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.16.

Victoria Thorne placed fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle and Walker-Rozo and Audra Shoop finished fourth and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle.

Duehr, Anderson, Walker-Rozo and Emily Hartman teamed to finish second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The same group also placed third in the 200-yard medley relay.

The Bees will compete at Morningside next Saturday.
