Late goal by St. Francis stings SAU

A goal from St. Francis (Ill.) in the 89th minute led to a 3-2 loss for St. Ambrose men's soccer Wednesday night in Davenport.

The Bees got on the scoreboard first, with a St. Francis own goal in the 3rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Fighting Saints evened the score at 1-all in the 20th minute, but SAU took the lead just two minutes later. Justin Tackett's header hit off the crossbar and ricocheted off the keeper into the net for a 2-1 lead. Eli Elliott had a chance to add to the St. Ambrose lead in the 27th minute, but his shot hit the crossbar, and the Bees would take a one-goal lead into halftime.

The visitors tied up the match at 2-2 in the 53rd minute. Zach Bauer made a save soon after to keep the score knotted at two. In the 64th minute, Hayden Newton had a chance on net, but his shot was saved. The Fighting Saints got the game-winner in the 89th minute to steal a 3-2 victory from the Bees. SAU had one final chance, but Owen Hull's header hit off the post with 43 seconds left.

Bauer finished with five saves in the loss. Tackett and Elliott both had two shots, while Newton, Hull, Brady Butler, Nevan Libert, Owen Gannaway, Hunter Lillie, Lucas Pizani, Zac Monnet, and Thomas Gaither each had one.

St. Ambrose will play their final regular-season home game on Saturday, October 21 against Calumet at 4 p.m.
