Newton's late goal gives St. Ambrose second straight victory

Hayden Newton scored with 10 seconds left to give St. Ambrose men's soccer a 3-2 win over Holy Cross Saturday afternoon in Davenport. The win is the second straight for the Bees.

Holy Cross (4-7-3, 2-3-2 CCAC) looked to have snatched a draw with a goal in the 83rd minute to make it 2-2, but Newton played hero for the home team. After a mis-clearance by the Saints defense in the box, Newton's shot found the back of the net in the final moments of the match for the 3-2 win.

The visitors took an early lead, scoring in the 6th minute for a 1-0 advantage. The Bees (3-4-2, 3-2 CCAC) found the tying score in the 32nd minute off a free kick. Joe Casebolt sent a ball into the box, and Zac Monnet got his head on the ball to make it a 1-1 game. Justin Tackett and Berto Medrano had chances for the home squad, but the teams would head into halftime tied.

St. Ambrose would go ahead 2-1 in the 78th minute. After a foul in the box was called on Holy Cross, German Worm stepped up to the penalty spot and converted to give SAU a one-goal lead. That led to Holy Cross' score before Newton saved the day for the Bees.

Zach Bauer made one save before Aden Grudzinski came in for the injured Bauer. Grudzinski was also credited with one save in the win.

St. Ambrose will travel to Roosevelt on Tuesday, October 10 for a 7 p.m. start.
