Evans scores game-winner as Bees earn first win

Ryan Evans' goal in the 44th minute proved to be the game-winner for St. Ambrose on Saturday morning. The goal helped SAU claim their first win of the season - a 2-1 victory over Saint Xavier at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport.

The Bees (1-3-2, 1-1 CCAC) took the lead in the match in the 35th minute. Ricardo Ronconi found Justin Tackett for the score to give St. Ambrose a 1-0 advantage. Evans doubled St. Ambrose's lead in the 44th with his right-footed shot from outside the box. Zach Bauer made a save, and the SAU defense prevented a goal just before halftime to keep the 2-0 lead at the break.

Saint Xavier (3-3-4, 1-2 CCAC) had a chance for a goal in the 65th minute after a foul on the Bees was called in the box. Bauer dove to his right and saved the penalty attempt by the Cougars to keep the two-goal advantage for SAU. St. Ambrose had a penalty kick opportunity themselves in the 81st minute, but Sam Flello's attempt was saved to keep the score at 2-0. SXU cut the SAU lead in the 84th minute on a goal from Pablo Guerrero and pushed for an equalizer. Bauer stopped the Cougars' final attempt on goal in the 87th minute to secure the 2-1 victory.

Bauer finished with seven saves in the win. Jörn Reck and Flello had two shots apiece for St. Ambrose. Tackett, Evans, Ronconi, Lucas Pizani, Zac Monnet, and Charlie Leinart recorded the other shot attempts.

SAU will be back at home on Tuesday, September 26 to face Judson University at 5 p.m.
