Brizuela, Elliott score in loss to Lakers

Brizuela, Elliott score in loss to Lakers

St. Ambrose scored twice in the second half on a cool night in Davenport, but it wasn't enough as the Bees fell 3-2 to the Roosevelt Lakers on Wednesday. The loss drops SAU to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the CCAC. The Lakers move to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in conference.

Down 2-0 at halftime, St. Ambrose got back in the game with a goal in the 63rd minute. Jorge Brizuela launched a long shot from outside the box that just got over the hand of the RU keeper to make it 2-1. The goal was Brizuela's third of the season. Neither team had many chances on goal until the visitors got a goal back in the 83rd minute. Alan Rubio's shot hit off the left post and bounced in to give Roosevelt a 3-1 lead with seven minutes remaining. The Bees showed some fight though, as they scored just four minutes later. Brizuela sent a ball down the right side, where Aidan Bagley ran onto it and crossed it into the box. Eli Elliott was able to get on the end of the cross and make it 3-2 with three minutes to go. But it was a little too late, as SAU ran out of time.

St. Ambrose had three shots in the first half. Brizuela's attempt in the 8th minute was saved, and Jorn Reck placed his shot just wide in the 22nd minute. Roosevelt got on the board in the 34th minute off a header by Eduardo Hernandez to take a 1-0 lead. Hayden Newton got a chance to tie the game in the 35th minute, but his shot was saved. The Lakers would score late in the half off a free kick to take a 2-0 lead at the break.

Zach Bauer was credited with three saves in the loss. Lucas Carbognin Pizani, Justin Tackett, Joseph Gaither Jr. along with Bauer, and Brizuela played the full 90 minutes for the Bees.

St. Ambrose will look for their first conference win on Saturday when they travel to Calumet for a 1:30 p.m. start.
